when we have more than 1 asin for the same product then it becomes a variation and to merge all the variation all together we need to make a parent Asin just for the recognition for all those variation and there main difference that parent cannot generate sales. On the other hand, child asin generates the sales for that particular product.

Parent & Child relationship can be a lot of different things, so for example on seller central you can have a parent and child account, for listing you can have a parent listing which has several child listings, listed under it, or even on Amazon shopper site, you can create a parent-child account, these things are simply that there is a parent which like the main account that have provided access to child users (secondary user), or in case of listing it carries the main listings under it.

If we have multiple products of the same design but different in color or size we marg them together by creating one parent ASIN, under that parent ASIN you can put multiple children ASINs.

When you sell product on amazon with different variation, you want all those variation to be together, these variation can be of different quantity, sizes or color or any other, now to keep them together you made the parent ASIN which its self not a sellable ASIN, it keep all the variation together, so when your listing is live on amazon, it shows that your product is selling in different variation, these ASINs which are in variation which are sellable items are called Child ASINs and that one ASIN which keep them together is called Parent ASIN.

Product listings that are offered on Amazon and have varying shapes, hues, flavors, and other characteristics are sometimes referred to as “variant” or “parent-child relationship” product listings.

The parent-child relationship is basically for variation you can create variations under one parent if you have products with multiple colors designs and variations and you want to show all the products together then you can add all the child ASINs under one parent.
